PERLMAN TO HEAD JUF CAMPAIGN...
By CJN staff (02/05/2010)
Theodore Perlman has been named chairman of the Jewish United Fund-Israel Emergency Fund 2010 Annual Campaign.

"I know this will be a challenging year," Perlman said. "But I deeply believe in our community's leadership, strength and generosity. We saw it in the tremendous support given to JUF's 2009 campaign, which raised more than $77.5 million. And we see it now in our community's outpouring to help the victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. This year will be no exception. Our community will do what is necessary to ensure that vital humanitarian services get to those who need them most."

Perlman, who is Chairman & CEO of The HAVI Group, LP, a global company he co-founded in 1974 to respond to the needs of the McDonald's Restaurants system, is no novice to the field of fundraising. His experience in the arena dates back to 1948 when, as a boy, he helped raise support for the state of Israel at a historic rally at the old Chicago Stadium.

"Over nearly 50 years of involvement, through economic booms and busts, I've learned that the needs never cease," Perlman said. "Our job might be harder this year, but with record numbers of Chicagoans turning to JUF-supported programs for food, medicine and financial assistance, increased community support is vital to helping those in need.

"I've always felt that you have to believe in something," he said. "I saw that dedication in my mother, who was very devoted to and actively involved in multiple organizations. I am always following in my parents footsteps.

"And I have always felt a very strong connection to my Jewish heritage. I have always felt that you have to take a part - that you have to give back to the community. I believe in this strongly - being part of the greater Jewish communal family makes my life complete."

"We are fortunate to have Ted at the helm of this year's campaign," said JUF President Steven B. Nasatir. "His character, intelligence, experience, and straight-forward approach will help to lead and inspire our community during what no doubt will be another challenging year."
