| Terrence A. Duffy, executive chairman of CME Group, will receive the National Scopus Award from the American Friends of The Hebrew University (AFHU) at a gala dinner on March 11, at the Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park Hotel. George Will, Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper columnist and author, will deliver the keynote address. Jim Williams, anchor and reporter at Chicago's CBS2 News, will serve as Master of Ceremonies.
The National Scopus Award is the highest honor conferred by AFHU. It is awarded to individuals who demonstrate humanitarian concerns throughout their career, and recognizes outstanding community leaders who have maintained an active involvement in humanitarian causes of local, national and international scope. The award, named for Mount Scopus, where The Hebrew University of Jerusalem's first cornerstones were laid in 1918, has come to symbolize the university's highest ideals. Past recipients include Steven Spielberg, Barbra Streisand, Nancy Reagan, Frank Sinatra, Quincy Jones, Elie Wiesel, Zubin Mehta, Gregory Peck, and Kirk Douglas. AFHU Midwest Region recipients include Leo Melamed, Jerold S. Solovy, and James Matanky.
Duffy is a leader of several humanitarian, philanthropic, and educational organizations. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Saint Xavier University, the Regional Advisory Board of The American Ireland Fund, and is Co-Chair of the Mayo Clinic Greater Chicago Leadership Council. Duffy is also Chairman of the NYMEX Foundation, whose mission is to fund and serve children in need, the elderly and local environmental causes, and Vice Chairman of the CME Group Foundation, whose mission is to enhance economic opportunity, health and education, especially for disadvantaged youth.
A leader in the financial sector, Duffy has served as Executive Chairman of CME Group since July 2007. In 2003, the U.S. Senate confirmed Duffy as a member of the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board (FRTIB), which administers the Thrift Savings Plan for federal employees that currently has more than 3.5 million participants and $190 billion under management.
"The Midwest Region of the American Friends of The Hebrew University is delighted to honor Terry Duffy, the Executive Chairman of CME Group. For many years, Terry has been a key business leader in our community, playing a vital role in maintaining Chicago's position as the center of the commodities marketplace," said Dan Schlessinger, president of AFHU's Midwest Region. "Despite those demands on his time, Terry has nonetheless devoted himself to many charitable and civic causes, meaningfully advancing the causes of children in need, the elderly, and our environment. Terry's life achievements exemplify Hebrew University's mission of 'sustaining the world,' making him an ideal recipient of the Scopus Award.
The dinner will be chaired by Gary D. Cohn, President and COO of Goldman Sachs, and Leo Melamed, Chairman Emeritus of CME Group. Vice Chairs are: Charles P. Carey, CME Group; Craig Donohue, CME Group; Phupinder Gill, CME Group; Charles H. Goodman, Henry Crown & Co.; Judd Malkin, JMB Realty; John F. Sandner, CME Group; Sam Sallerson and Jeffrey Wolfman, SW Securities. Proceeds from the gala will go towards pediatric medical research at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
The event will take place Thursday, March 11, at Fairmont Chicago, Millennium Park Hotel, 200 N. Columbus Drive, Chicago. Reception begins at 5:30 pm, dinner and awards presentation at 6:30 pm.
